Become a Lipreading Teacher

We are desperately short of trained lipreading teachers. This is a wonderfully rewarding career for anyone with empathy for people with hearing loss and a clear speaking voice. Many lipreading teachers have hearing loss themselves.

There are now regular Lipreading Teacher Training Courses (LTTCs) in London, Scotland and occasional ones elsewhere.

Most of the training is done in your area with block weeks or weekends attending college.

An interview is necessary before a place on a course can be offered. Please use the contact details below for more information on the course of your choice. Not all courses run every year.

ATLA can offer small discretionary bursaries (maximum £1,175) to students on approved training courses in order to boost the number of qualified teachers, especially in areas of the country where there are no or few classes currently. Funds are raised by ATLA members and supporters, and it is only through their generosity that these bursaries are available. For more information please contact treasurer@atlalipreading.org.uk If you would like to support our bursary fund, please see how to donate.

Teaching Qualifications (England only)

In England only, teachers employed by Adult Education colleges are expected to have a recognised teaching qualification. This includes Lipreading teachers. The courses above offer the minimum required qualification, the AET (Award in Education and Training, Level 3 or 4), formerly PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). Some employers may expect or encourage you to study for a higher qualification:

  • CET, Certificate in Education and Training – Level 4 (previously CTLLS, Level 3 or 4);
  • DET, Diploma in Education and Training – Level 5 (previously DTLLS, level 5);
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Post Compulsory Education.

Further guidance available here.

Vacancies

Vacancies for lipreading teachers are listed on our members’ site. If you would like to advertise a vacancy please contact ATLA. Advertising with ATLA is free, although donations are always welcome. In particular, we are currently trying to rebuild our very depleted Bursary Fund for people training to be lipreading teachers.
